5 Tips for Succeeding in Ballet Auditions

Auditions can be stressful, especially for ballet dancers who are competing for a limited number of spots in companies and training programs. However, with the right preparation and mindset, you can set yourself up for success and increase your chances of getting into the program or job of your dreams.

Here are five tips for succeeding in ballet auditions:

1. Practice, practice, practice: 

The more you practice, the more comfortable and confident you will be in the audition room. Your studio should be providing you with enough daily classes (15+ hours/week at older levels), so take class regularly, work on your technique, and polish your artistry.  An audition is just another class, so get comfortable performing in class before there are stakes.  

2. Research the company or program: 

This is where The Ballet Scout is here to help!  Find out as much as you can about the company or program you are auditioning for. What is their style and aesthetic? What repertoire do they perform?  Does this fit my talents and goals as a dancer? Is it within my budget or in a location that I want to live in?  Knowing this information can help you choose auditions where you’ll shine & lead to satisfaction in the programs you end up attending.  

3. Know your strengths: 

Identify your unique strengths as a dancer and showcase them in the audition. This could be your technical skills, artistry, or stage presence.  In all cases, however, don’t overthink the technique, and instead perform in the audition.  Auditioners want to see you dance, and if you are going for it, you’ll stand out.

4. Be yourself: 

It's important to be authentic and genuine in an audition. Don't try to be someone you're not – the panel wants to see the real you.  An audition, especially at the training level, is more about finding people with potential to grow than the perfect candidate.  Show your determination, your passion, and how you can adapt on the fly to what they tell you, and you will find success. 

5. Stay positive:
   
   

Auditions can be tough, and you may face rejection. However, it's important to stay positive and not let setbacks discourage you. It is nothing against you; everyone faces rejection. Keep working hard and you will eventually achieve your goals.
