Video Requirements:

Thank you for registering for a Pre-Recorded Video audition for the Teacher Training Program (TTP) at Canada's National Ballet School (NBS). We are looking forward to getting to know you through this audition process! To submit a video audition for NBS’ Teacher Training Program please choose one of the two options below: 1. Film a brief sample of your ballet class work (outline below). We encourage you to dance in the balletic style and at the level that reflects your current training. This material can be from a syllabus (e.g., RAD or Cecchetti Intermediate) or free material designed by you or your current teacher. Or: 2. Film a brief sample of yourself teaching a class. Following the second outline below, we encourage you to present your own exercises rather than a syllabus content. If you select this option, please ensure you have written consent from parents/guardians (or if 18+ from the student) to share the video with NBS for the purpose of your audition. Whatever option you choose we encourage you to focus on movement quality, musicality and overall artistry of presentation. Option 1 – Class Outline Introduction (max 1 minute) • Please introduce yourself at the beginning of the tape • If you have any injuries or are modifying movements, please let us know Barre work (max 10 minutes) • Please film in profile i.e., facing sideways to the camera • Include at least one side of plié, tendu and grand battement Centre practice (max 10 minutes) • Please film from the front of the studio • Include an adage and pirouette exercise Allegro material (max 5 minutes) • Please film from the front • Sauté in 1st and allegro enchaînement Additional material (max 2 minutes) • In addition, you may submit 2 minutes of grand allegro, • pointe work, or a classical or contemporary variation What to wear: - Please wear the ballet attire that you regularly wear for training class and that feel best presents you as a dancer. Option 2 Outline - Prepare and film a 25-minute class that includes elements of barre, center practice, and allegro. As you are preparing your class consider both an overarching theme, the pace of the class, and the training goals for each exercise. The material presented should be entirely your own work and not from a syllabus or mentor teacher. - At the beginning of the video, introduce yourself and share the level of class and the primary theme for the classwork (e.g., this is a class for 11 to 13-year-old students focused exploring the dynamic application of rotation in cou de pied positions) - Please ensure that the video is focused on your teaching and demonstration, rather than on the students. - Upon registration you will be asked to confirm that you have written consent from the participating students/parents/guardians to share the video with NBS for the purpose of your audition. What to wear: • Please wear the attire that best presents you as a dance educator. Tips for filming: • Please consider dancewear that will stand out from your background. If your backdrop is white, avoid wearing white; if your backdrop is black, avoid wearing black, etc. • Make sure your primary light source (natural or artificial) is in front of you. If your light is behind you or coming in from the side, it can backlight or sidelight you which will cause dark shadows. Avoid filming with your back to a window, face the window instead. • Ensure that the filming takes place in a quiet space. Remove all sound distractions from the room. And remember to put your device on silent. • We encourage you, if possible, to use a video camera on a fixed tripod. If you are filming with a cellphone, please use shoot in landscape mode (with your phone horizontal). • If possible, place the camera between waist and eye level, capturing your full frame, please avoid placing the camera on the floor. The deadline to submit your submission is April 27th, 2026. Following your audition, you may be asked to meet with the Head of the Teacher Training Program for an interview via Zoom. Remember, if you have any questions, or require any individualized support or accommodation for your audition please don’t hesitate to reach out!
