National Moravian-Silesian Theatre

The National Moravian-Silesian Theatre with a seat in Ostrava is the biggest and oldest professional theatre in the Moravian-Silesian Region and at the same time the biggest cultural institution established by the Statutory City of Ostrava. It is a noticeable centre of the cultural, spiritual, intellectual, and social life of citizens of Ostrava and its wide surroundings. It is the only theatre in Moravia that has four artistic companies—opera, drama, operetta/musical, and ballet—that regularly perform on three permanent scenes—at the Antonín Dvořák Theatre, Jiří Myron Theatre, and the Theatre "12". Annually, the theatre presents 16–19 premieres and performs almost 500 performances. The widely approached ambitious dramaturgy of all four artistic companies is affected by the intention to address the widest possible audience of all generations and interests. This may be evident from the dramaturgy that contains pieces of the classical Czech and world repertoire, innovative and contemporary works, experimental performances, and cross-genre projects. Thanks to its quality, the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre belongs to the top of the Czech theatre art. This has been confirmed not only by awards received at theatre festivals but also by the interest of home and foreign performers, choreographers, and soloists who perform in our theatre as guests. The Theatre “12” is a chamber theatre space of the National Moravian-Silesian Theatre that was established in the 100th season and opened on 16 September 2018. It is situated on the premises of the Jiří Myron Theatre on the Čs. legií 12—where the former Civic Credit Union used to be—and consists of the theatre hall and the bar Ve Dvanáctce. The author of the architectonic study is Jiří Stejskalík. With a seating capacity of 60, this theatre offers a very intimate connection between an actor and a viewer. Also, it is a space that allows all four ensembles to perform theatre pieces and do cross-genre theatre experiments. There are talk shows and chamber music shows that are in the theatre’s repertoire. During the summer holidays, the Theatre “12” is a venue for the event Author’s Reading Month.
