The ANNA MCCOWAN-JOHNSON ASPIRANT PROGRAM is a full-time (September to June), two-year, post-secondary training program for advanced-level classical ballet dancers who are making the transition from student to professional dancer. Among its many advantages is close contact with the RWB Company. Aspirants regularly attend Company class and are frequently cast in the Company’s full-length classical ballet productions, both in Winnipeg and on tour. The program also provides dancers with specially designed classes in ballet and pointe technique, modern, and classical variations, as well as the opportunity work with new and established choreographers and to create new works of their own. Additional classes may be offered in the following subjects: drama, character dance, and modern dance partnering. Aspirants are also supported in the preparation of audition photos, videos, applications, and other logistics, and are invited to take part in a variety of lectures on topics such as finances, stress, and anxiety management in collaboration with the Dancers’ Transition Resource Centre. Alumni of the Program enrolled at the University of Winnipeg can have their studio and course work recognized by the Faculty of Theatre and Film with up to 18 credit hours towards their degree. REGISTRATION INFORMATION: Entrance to the Anna McCowan-Johnson Aspirant Program is by audition only. Candidates must have a high school graduation diploma (Grade 12 / Senior 12 in Manitoba) in order to enroll in the Program. If you are unable to attend an audition in person, you may submit a video audition until June 1, 2026. Students who are accepted following their audition will be invited to attend Summer Session 2026, from July 6-25, 2026 in Winnipeg. This is the second step in the audition process for admission to the full-time Regular Session, which runs from September to June. Video auditions should be between 5 and 10 minutes and should demonstrate barre and centre work and may include pointe work and/or a variation. As well, students auditioning by video must include: a recent photo of themselves facing front showing a tendu in 2nd position, arms in 2nd position; a letter of recommendation from their dance teacher; a completed Registration Form and payment of the Video Audition fee of $65 CAD.
