Mentorship Our world-renowned faculty of dance artists, researchers and scholars offer in-depth mentorship toward your creative and teaching goals. Historic and Progressive The MFA was implemented in 1980 and has a long tradition of excellence and leadership in advanced considerations of dance in multiple contexts. Interdisciplinary Located within a Research One institution, students can connect with campus artists and scholars, research and technology centers to explore interdisciplinary and collaborative work and curriculum. Intimate The graduate program is intentionally small (12 cohort, with 4 admitted each year), and highly selective, which promotes high standards, personal attention and ample opportunities for every student to choreograph, teach, and perform. Space and Time to Choreograph Designed with recycled and environmentally sustainable materials, our Graduate Dance Center is the physical manifestation of our educational philosophy. World-Class Facilities Krannert Center for the Performing Arts has four world-class theaters and the Dance Department has seven spacious light-filled studios. Career Opportunities Professional networking and career development is supported through course work, workshops and engagement with Dance faculty, alumni and guest artists. Teaching and Financial Support Teaching Assistants teach at the university level for three years, a necessary prerequisite for academic teaching positions, and receive one-on-one mentoring in their teaching practices. Teaching Assistantships over 25% time receive a tuition waiver for your graduate studies!

Session Description

Requiring 60 credit hours of graduate-level courses (400 level and above), the MFA curriculum allows MFA candidates to design a course of study that supports their individual choreographic interests in collaboration with faculty mentors. Dance Design your physical practice through a global spectrum of aesthetics and dance forms including African- Caribbean, Ballet, Capoeira, Contemporary, Hip-hop, House, Jazz, Modern, Tap, Umfundalai and Vogue; and Somatics courses such as Alexander, Feldenkrais, Body-Mind Centering, Bartenieff or Yoga. Choreograph Create dance works for state-of-the art stages at Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, or produce your work in site-specific concerts/spaces. Synthesize Dive deep into your thesis project (performance, written and oral components) as a synthesis of your choreographic and academic research. Cross Disciplines Pursue interdisciplinary studies in world-class centers such as the Thomas M. Siebel Center for Computer Science, Arnold O. and Mabel M.Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, Human Dimensions of Environmental Systems program, and the Siebel Center for Design Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities. Build a Sustainable Career Pursue a graduate minor in fields such as African American Studies, Cinema Studies, Latino/Latina Studies, and Gender and Women’s Studies. Gain a Yoga Certification in the yoga certification program. Alexander Technique and Pilates certifications are available in Urbana-Champaign.
